Aluminum coil 6 series or 7 series which is better?

2000 series aluminum coil

The 6061 and 7005 aluminum coils are the representatives of the 6 series aluminum coil and 7 series aluminum coils. They are both very mature aluminum alloy coils and are widely used in industry and life. Among them, 6061 is the code name of an aluminum alloy mainly doped with 1% magnesium and 0.6% silicon, and 7005 is also the code name of an aluminum alloy mainly doped with 4.5% zinc and 1.4% magnesium. And what are the differences between the two types of aluminum coils?

First of all, the heat treatment process: T6 is a heat-treatment process. For example, 6061-T6 is a 6061 aluminum coil that has undergone T6 heat treatment. 7005 T6 Tensile is 51000 PSI, 6061 T6 Tensile is 45000 PSI; 7005 T6 Volatility is 42000 PSI, 6061 T6 Volatility is 40000 PSI.

In this way, 7005 aluminum coil is stronger than 6061 aluminum coil, but 6061 aluminum is more willful than 7005 aluminum, but the different characteristics between the two are still different.
t6 is the nominal 20-hour tempering t treatment, and there is also a 10-hour tempering t4 heat treatment, etc.

Some aluminum coils say 6061 aluminum, some say 6011, some say 7005…
Some people think that the larger the number of aluminum coil number, the more expensive and better the aluminum coil, and the stronger the performance (performance includes factors such as lightweight, high strength, durability, etc.), but this view is wrong.
First of all, let us first understand the specific meaning and difference of aluminum material numbers:
1 series aluminum coil (representing pure aluminum! The aluminum content is not less than 99%)
2 series aluminum coil (mainly copper alloy)
3 series aluminum coil (main manganese)
4 series aluminum coil (mainly silicon)
5 series aluminum coil (main magnesium)
6 series aluminum coil (mainly magnesium and silicon)
7 series aluminum coil (mainly zinc)
8 series aluminum coils (Other Elements)

The characteristics of 6 series aluminum are medium strength, good plasticity, and excellent corrosion resistance. In particular, it has no tendency to stress corrosion cracking and has excellent weldability, corrosion resistance, and cold workability. It is a promising alloy with a wide range of applications.

The 7-series aluminum alloy is another commonly used alloy and comes in a wide variety. It contains zinc and magnesium. The most common aluminum alloy is the 7075 alloy, but it cannot be welded, and its corrosion resistance is quite poor. Zinc is the main alloying element in this series, plus a little magnesium alloy. The material can be heat treated to achieve very high strength properties.

This is only relative if you have to ask “if it is the same forging process and the same welding method, but only the aluminum coil is different, which product is better?” It should be 7005 aluminum in terms of weight, strength, etc. Slightly better than 6061 aluminum.
In fact, the common application and forging methods between the two are different, and the performance is also different due to different applications, so it is not possible to judge which of the two aluminum coils is better just by the size of the model.
